I remember when I was young and watched the sound of music, I had wished then that I could be like one of the captain's children.God! How they could sing and the girls were beautiful with pretty smiles & their vocabulary to me then was impeccable...
I have since grown up and have realized that we are all actors, I don't want to use the word hypocrites because that sounds so negative, but yes we are somewhat actors.
The way we cover our pain and smile or when we show others the pain we are going through because we want them to empathize with us...we manipulate the people around us either consciously or unconsciously...
The Babies cry when they feel that attention has wandered away from them, couples smile and dance on their wedding day when what they are actually thinking of is life after that day and if they made the right choice...
The women pretend to give way to the men when they actually resent them and wish they were holding the reins instead.
The way we say 'thank God it's not me' when our friends are in deep trouble while sympathizing with them.
The way we feel we are better than our neighbours and so on.
My beautiful sister once told me in so many words that there was nothing called 'selfless' that we were all selfish creatures and I was inclined to agree with her because truly no act is selfless...
Is it when we tithe? We expect something from God in return...
Is it when we help out even when we don't feel like it? We expect that person to help us later when we need them to, that is why we use the word 'ungrateful' when that person fails do so...
Is it when we attend occasions like weddings? We expect others to attend ours...
Is it when we go to church? We expect to be perceived holy and to be counted among those that will make heaven...
Is it when we give unreservedly to our spouses? We expect them to be tied to us through guilt or gratitude...
Is it when we celebrate friends who have made it? We expect them to remember us when they are in a generous mode or pave the way for us when we need them to, denying the tinge of envy that would be creeping its way into our hearts...
In these little ways and more, we are actors. No one is completely kind, wicked, annoying or even arrogant; there are times when even the most characteristic we are known by, slips for another to exhibit itself depending on the prevailing circumstances.
No! We are not really hypocrites, we are actors.
What will you be remembered for when you leave the stage?
